What is a jeezy?

I guess if I were really cool, I’d know.

7 7 DAUGHTRY DAUGHTRY 180903 17 155021 795234

And there you have it.

First of all, congratulations, Taylor! These are impressive numbers, especially for anyone who thought he wouldn’t even crack the top 10 (and yes, those people were out there). They’re not DAUGHTRY (who did have the Black Friday push behind him, and who happens to be just tailor-made for the MTV and radio crowd), but they’re good numbers. I’m not stupid enough to think that he was going to sell 600K copies his first week (although I’ll admit, I did think he’d sell just a tad bit more). But it also looks like Hits Daily Double overshot their estimate by 25-50K, which is interesting, since they usually lowball.

Look. Idol is a pop show. Taylor is not a pop artist, no matter how many Rob Thomas songs he’s forced to record, or no matter how Clive seeks to “define” him. His style of music is not “mainstream,” if by “mainstream” you mean worthy of Top 40 radio play or appearances in Teen People.

I say, congratulate the man on his more than respectable numbers, recognize the fact that he’s got a solid fanbase who can be counted on to sustain a long and fruitful career, and let him make the kind of music he wants to make–not what the suits think will win over the hipster crowd. Let him be a Jimmy Buffet. Let him be a Taj Mahal or a Keb’Mo.’ Yes, of course it would have been a wonderful validation of my personal musical taste to see Taylor post to-the-moon first week sales. But truth be told, I’d rather see him do a’ight enough to prove he has a niche market, and to be allowed to cater exclusively to that niche market, on his second album, than to continue having to mollify ClearChannel DJs with tripe like “Dream Myself Awake.”

And just for kicks and gigs, here are the first-week sales figures for all Idol debuts:

1. Clay – “Measure of a Man” – 612,859 (# 1)

Hicks’ ‘will do it his way’ to borrow “another’s” catch-line.

I too, thought the Soul Patrol would have skyrocketed the numbers to Jupiter, but well, many American Idol fans are like temps on the job-site, not in for the long haul, just get swept up with the giddy tide, roll with the flow and have no actual company loyalty. It’s all words. Everyone likes a winner. Many of the Soul Patrol jumped on board when it looked like the big guy was gonna win, and too, many jumped on after the win… Just to do it. meh.

Hicks is a high caliber musician and artist; first week numbers OK, but longevity may be his key niche.

    Groove on Soulman.

What the kids are sayin’

"I hate them all. The judges, TPTB, the blatant manipulation, the songs, the contestants, everything. I'm a die-hard Cook fan, but for the love of god, at least try to look like you're enjoying yourself up there! Please? Syesha was awesome but she ruined it by being completely shameless and disgusting. Yes, being on American Idol is exactly like the civil rights movement, except for the part where you're fighting to make the world a better place."

"All I can say after the disgusting display tonight of favoritism towards the mediocrity that is David A. - good luck trying to market and make money off of that kid, American Idol. (Not to mention good luck dealing with his father.) All the teeny boppers may buy up his American Idol coronation single, but they will quickly forget about him before the album comes out. And I shudder to think of a David A. album - song after song of unrelenting sameness and heavy breathing. Why they are pimping him for the win is beyond me."

"This show was simply a hot buttered mess tonight. And Jason "needs to be arrested for what he did to I Shot the Sheriff. But I hope he stays. He amuses me. "
