Taylor Hicks is good peeps.

People Magazine has a small story regarding Taylor Hicks in their new issue. The article details Taylor’s visit to Ray Charles’ recording studio–as the first artist allowed to record there since Mr. Charles’ passing. (Unfortunately, the song recorded, which was rumored to be a cover of a more obscure Charles tune, did not make the final track listing.) During the visit, Joe Adams, Mr. Charles’ longtime manager, gave Taylor a pair of Mr. Charles’ cufflinks, stating “I spoke to Ray today, and he wanted you to have these.” Valerie Ervin, COO of Ray Charles Enterprises, took a listen to some of Taylor’s new tracks and had this to say:

“Taylor is Ray reincarnated. He sits there moving and twitching just like Mr. C would do. To me, it’s like talking to Mr. C all over again. I’m like, ‘Okay, you’re supposed to be black and a little older.'”

Though Hicks undoubtely would take those words as high praise, no doubt the debate still rages as to whether Hicks is his own man, or whether he’s merely a pale imitation of some great originals, Taylor Hicks doing James Brown doing Joe Cocker doing Ray Charles. To that effect, Taylor insists that his music is his own sound, combining elements of what he’s learned from artists like Charles, Ambulance LTD (Who? Guess I’ll have to look them up on the ol’ iTunes), and even the more modern beats of Christina Aguilera and Taylor’s number-one fan Justin Timberlake.

Hmm. Interesting. I will definitely say that Taylor’s first album, In Your Time, is the standard by which I will forever measure Taylor’s future endeavors. That album, to me, is distinctly Taylor. The Deal, too, bears the indelible stamp of Hicks. But from what I’ve heard of this album so far, there’s something else going on now. Obviously, this “modern whomp” is different than what he offered on his two previous releases, but I do worry that Taylor’s uniqueness will be a bit watered down. You can hear it already in “Dream Myself Awake”–sorry, but there’s just nothing Taylor about that tune. “The Right Place” is purely Taylor when it comes to the vocals, but I did say to myself “gee, that sounds like a Ray Charles song” before finding out that Bryan Adams wrote it for, you guessed it, Ray Charles. “The Runaround,” though, while harkening back to 60s-style soul/funk, does seem very Taylorized. I just hope that the majority of the album is Taylor, drawing upon his influences to find his own distinct style, and not TaylorCliveRobThomas.

I understand what your saying and why your saying it…personally, call me ‘Taylor-starved’ but I have yet to hear anything from the new album I haven’t liked, DMA included.
I can’t help but wonder if maybe we do have to lose alittle to gain alot? If so, I don’t have a problem giving up some of the original to see him gain the success hes sought for so long. As long as he doesn’t completely cross over to become N’Sync, I think it’ll be ok. Turn him loose in a live, smaller venue and I think we will always get the real, unplugged Taylor Hicks.

I agree with that sentiment 100%, Bobo. Maybe part of the reason is that I’m just not used to hearing Taylor backed up by horns, percussion and the whole shebang. Definitely could be part of it. I’m excited about this new “Heaven Knows” track, though—sounds like it’s going to be more modern whomp…and I do love the sound he came up with for The Runaround. I’m just hoping the album is more Runaround and less DMA.

I am totally in love with the tracks on Taylor’s new CD. “The Runaround” is pure Taylor. This is the first single off the CD and I know it will be big. Every time I listen to “The Right Place” gives me goose bumps when I listen to it..Taylor’s take on modern “WOMP” music as he calls it shows how talented he is..He can take any song and make it his own. Taylor was destined to be on stage and to perform. GO Taylor!! The Soul Patrol loves you!!

What the kids are sayin’

"I hate them all. The judges, TPTB, the blatant manipulation, the songs, the contestants, everything. I'm a die-hard Cook fan, but for the love of god, at least try to look like you're enjoying yourself up there! Please? Syesha was awesome but she ruined it by being completely shameless and disgusting. Yes, being on American Idol is exactly like the civil rights movement, except for the part where you're fighting to make the world a better place."

"All I can say after the disgusting display tonight of favoritism towards the mediocrity that is David A. - good luck trying to market and make money off of that kid, American Idol. (Not to mention good luck dealing with his father.) All the teeny boppers may buy up his American Idol coronation single, but they will quickly forget about him before the album comes out. And I shudder to think of a David A. album - song after song of unrelenting sameness and heavy breathing. Why they are pimping him for the win is beyond me."

"This show was simply a hot buttered mess tonight. And Jason "needs to be arrested for what he did to I Shot the Sheriff. But I hope he stays. He amuses me. "
