Friday night roundup

The week’s blurbs, squibs, quotes and posts that just didn’t seem to fit anywhere else.

“I think an entertainer’s job is to heal.”  —Katharine McPhee in Blender Magazine.  (Yeah, that makes sense:  Alexander Fleming…Jesus Christ…Dr. Fred Epstein…Kat McPhee.)

“Overall, he looks like a well-dressed man, who has a casual and confident attitude.” Teen People on Taylor Hicks’ look at the AMAs.  The magazine dubbed his look “The Best Suit.”

“She’s fresh-faced and her straight dark hair and blunt cut give her an edge that she never had on American Idol. ” Teen People on Katharine McPhee’s look at the AMAs.  The magazine dubbed her look “The Most Remarkable.”

Season Three powerhouse Jennifer Hudson signed a record deal with Clive Davis’ J Records.

Over on the official American Idol boards, Taylor’s fans seemed to be generally in consensus that his newly-released tracks were just what the Soul Patrol had ordered, although there was some lingering concern about the schlocky tune “Dream Myself Awake.” Kat’s fans, on the other hand, were split, with some embracing her mainstream pop/R&B sound, while others seemed betrayed, having hoped for a Norah Jones-esque production from their Idol.

DAUGHTRY, the debut album from Chris Daughtry and his band, was almost universally snubbed by the critics, who seemed to delight in labeling Chris et. al. as derivative of every late 90s/early 00s mid-tempo rock band they could think of.

Taylor Hicks told Gray Charles that he’s “cool” with criticism that his new album will be too far skewed toward the pop demographic, because “this is a huge industry and a huge world of music lovers.  I gotta get some new fans, I gotta bring the 17 and 18 year old kids over to the “soul side” via a pop sensibility.”

What the kids are sayin’

"I hate them all. The judges, TPTB, the blatant manipulation, the songs, the contestants, everything. I'm a die-hard Cook fan, but for the love of god, at least try to look like you're enjoying yourself up there! Please? Syesha was awesome but she ruined it by being completely shameless and disgusting. Yes, being on American Idol is exactly like the civil rights movement, except for the part where you're fighting to make the world a better place."

"All I can say after the disgusting display tonight of favoritism towards the mediocrity that is David A. - good luck trying to market and make money off of that kid, American Idol. (Not to mention good luck dealing with his father.) All the teeny boppers may buy up his American Idol coronation single, but they will quickly forget about him before the album comes out. And I shudder to think of a David A. album - song after song of unrelenting sameness and heavy breathing. Why they are pimping him for the win is beyond me."

"This show was simply a hot buttered mess tonight. And Jason "needs to be arrested for what he did to I Shot the Sheriff. But I hope he stays. He amuses me. "
