Two Taylor Hicks tracks for your enjoyment.

I’m gettin’ an A in Broken Hearts/got my degree in Cryin’

Taylor-Hicks-rj10.jpgAs promised, Gray “Q” Charles momentarily left the continuum to bring us a snippet of two of Taylor’s upcoming songs, “The Runaround” and “Dream Myself Awake.”

The Runaround” may be the first single off the album, but no one really knows for sure.  I certainly don’t see it getting airplay on any Top 40 stations, but I do see it becoming an “anthem” song for television shows.

Hear it for yourself:

The Runaround” (streaming Quicktime) (a little bit better quality)

So, what do I think of the song?  After hearing the entire thing (as opposed to just the chorus, which was posted earlier), I love it.  The beginning has a fabulous African-influenced drumbeat, the verses have an interesting melody to them, and after the bridge, Taylor starts pushing into his highest range (without going into his falsetto), where in my opinion he does his best vocal work.  What I really like about this song, besides the creative use of instrumentation, is that Taylor really does stretch his range and abilities.  We get his soft low range, we get his growling, we get slides, we get Taylor really pushing his whiskey tenor.  I could have done without the background singers, but now we’re really just quibbling.

Dream Myself Awake” was penned by Rob Thomas and sounds radio-friendly.  Extremely radio-friendly.  Too radio-friendly.  It’s formulaic, it’s generic, it’s…well, it’s Top 40 radio.  If Taylor got Biced, this is the song he got Biced on.  Honestly, substitute Taylor’s voice on this for Chris Daughtry’s, or Chad Kroeger’s, or even Tim McGraw’s (think “Live Like You Were Dying”).  You can pretty much imagine any of them singing this song, can’t you?  It’s just one of those bland, pablum-y, non-offensive songs that are so popular these days.  I love Taylor, I love his voice, I love his style…but this song gets a thumbs-down.  Judge for yourself:

Final verdict:  After hearing the clips, I felt relieved that we won’t be getting an album completely filled with songs about rainbows and unicorns…but at the same time, I’m not jumping for joy…yet.  I’m anticipating an album with one or two tracks that I can really love, but I’m more of a “bluesy/achy Taylor” fan than I am a “funky/groovy Taylor” fan (yes, I like them both, but I do have a preference).

Don’t you give me the runaround, too. Leave your opinions below.

What the kids are sayin’

"I hate them all. The judges, TPTB, the blatant manipulation, the songs, the contestants, everything. I'm a die-hard Cook fan, but for the love of god, at least try to look like you're enjoying yourself up there! Please? Syesha was awesome but she ruined it by being completely shameless and disgusting. Yes, being on American Idol is exactly like the civil rights movement, except for the part where you're fighting to make the world a better place."

"All I can say after the disgusting display tonight of favoritism towards the mediocrity that is David A. - good luck trying to market and make money off of that kid, American Idol. (Not to mention good luck dealing with his father.) All the teeny boppers may buy up his American Idol coronation single, but they will quickly forget about him before the album comes out. And I shudder to think of a David A. album - song after song of unrelenting sameness and heavy breathing. Why they are pimping him for the win is beyond me."

"This show was simply a hot buttered mess tonight. And Jason "needs to be arrested for what he did to I Shot the Sheriff. But I hope he stays. He amuses me. "
